Fred Done, the 83-year-old founder of Betfred and Britain’s highest-paying taxpayer this year, has issued a stark warning about the impact of further tax increases on the gambling industry.
In an interview with the Financial Times over the weekend, Done cautioned that additional tax hikes could result in widespread betting shop closures, harm related sectors such as horse racing and accelerate the decline of the high street.
Betfred currently operates approximately 1,094 retail shops across the UK. Done highlighted the concrete risks of Machine Gaming Duty – taxes on gambling machines – doubling from 20% to 40%, a move reportedly under consideration by Chancellor John Healey ahead of the Autumn Budget.

The barge itself never actually floated, by the way. That was just a myth. It sat on a fixed platform that created a mild rocking motion. That piece of Vegas engineering, like the statue’s original perch, is now history.
The barge functioned as an intimate stage graced by legendary performers, including Dionne Warwick, Blues Traveler, Matt Goss, and CeeLo Green. Its final performer was another Vegas icon rumored to be powered by hydraulics: Wayne Newton. His “Up Close & Personal” residency in 2019 was the lounge’s final act before the pandemic shut down the Strip for 90 days and closed Cleopatra’s Barge for good in March 2020.
The lounge enjoyed one last moment in the spotlight in 2022, however, when Adele—on the eve of the debut of her long-delayed residency at the Colosseum—tweeted a photo of herself goofing around nervously on its abandoned deck.

This is a mainstream release designed to fit widely rather than to stand out
For operators, the appeal of a title like this is straightforward. You get a recognizable theme, a medium-volatility math model and a multi-feature package that slots cleanly into a mixed lobby. For REEVO, each release like Thunder Walker broadens the content it can offer partners and reinforces its identity as a volume provider working within established formats.
REEVO positions Thunder Walker as a title built for broad appeal, combining an epic Greek mythology theme, Walking Wild mechanics, Jackpot and Collect features and medium volatility gameplay for players looking for both entertainment and balanced reward potential. Stripped of the marketing framing, that’s a clear statement of intent. This is a mainstream release designed to fit widely rather than to stand out sharply, and it fits neatly within the pattern of REEVO’s mythology-heavy output.
